The starting point for the work began as a response to the pandemic and the deluge of micro and macro images, and information regarding the virus. Specifically, I considered the phrase “Your Bubble”, words heard so often during the pandemic. Inspired by bubbles, fractals (self-similar macro/micro patterns), the work was an attempt to depict a transitional state, the ambiguity of becoming and or disintegrating. Alluding to the paradox of the pandemic that is massive in reach, while at the same time microscopic, highlighting matters of scale regarding the self, the other, the world.
The process for making this work required time and repetition since each sphere was individually slip-cast, constructed and fired in the kiln. But for me, solace is found in the labour of making so the repetitive process of slip casting each porcelain piece was in a way a tonic for the anxiety and uncertainty that came out of the COVID-19 crisis.
