Pliny’s Slumber, 2018-19, hand-built porcelain, glaze.

A large book made from porcelain sits open, various plants and animals emerge from the pages. Tucked under the corner of the last page in the book is an empty birds nest. Pliny the Elder was the first to attempt to write a book about the whole of the natural world. This work is also inspired by the Forest Floor still-life paintings of Otto Marseus van Schrieck, and imagines Pliny’s book “The Natural History” come to life.
